On the Saturday afternoon Holden's manager of the fencing team, he loses their equipment on a New York City subway train, resulting in the cancellation of a match. Holden has been expelled and is not to return after Christmas break, which begins the following Wednesday. So Holden gets all the money he owns and strolls the streets of New York going from hotel to hotel until the Wednesday comes.

The Scarlet Pimpernel
The smell of blood, sweat and tears fill the town. The cold air
rushes through my body as though ice has been laid inside of me.
10:10 the clock reads, the drums get louder, the cheers are thundering
through the streets, as I see the horse and carriage galloping through
the streets. *SLICE*! Everyone chants, except me of course.
The cloudy/muggy weather and the smoke make it difficult for me to breathe.
I am numbing the more I am here, watching people getting their heads sliced off.
*SLICE*! I am getting pushed back and forth, left to right. *SLICE*! The bodies
of everyone are pushed up against mine. *SLICE*! The wind is howling,
I can taste the raw flesh of the freshly chopped heads. *SLICE*! I feel
nauseous. *SLICE*! I can’t do this anymore. *SLICE*! Everything is hazy;
the noises are becoming blurs in the background. *SLICE*! I want to run away,
but I know that if I do, the executers will find me,
catch me, *SLICE*! And they’ll be holding my head next. *SLICE*!
I hear a bang. Like someone has fallen. I realize what has happened, who has fallen.
I want to rush over to them and help them. But I can’t, and I know why.
30 seconds later, I wake up…
